Discussion - of the exam paper
The Sky
Observations of clouds and skylines have proved inspirational for many photographers and filmmakers. Stephen Shore and Edward Steichen photographed clouds at various times of the day. In the film Mistaken Memoris of Mediaeval Manhattan, Brian Eno produced a time-lapse sequence of NewYork filmed in a vertical format, with buildings silhouetted against a drifting atmospheric sky. In the photobook Solitude of Ravens, Masahisa Fukase produced evocative images of birds in flight against dramatic skies. Prouce your own response, making reference to appropriate work by others.

Plan
This weekend (28/04/2019) I'm going to go up to London and take pictures of the sky in typical London scenery and landmarks so i have photos that expand from nature based images.
Save all of my shoots onto a USB so they are all in one place and bring my SD cards in case something goes wrong and I definitely have the photos with me.
I'm going to go through my photos and pick the ones I like the most and take them into Photoshop and start manipulating the settings.
I want to keep them natural because I'm not a fan when a photograph has been manipulated too much in Photoshop because in my eyes its no longer natural and a true picture.
Therefore, I'm going to only change the main settings and convert some to black and white so my photos do still seem interesting.
However, I might make half the image black and white and the other colour to make the overall image seem more interesting and show the examiner that I am experimenting with different techniques, but still keep it looking natural.

For this shoot I decided to go to a castle in Stansted Mountfitchetand take pictures of the scenery around there.
Research Artist
I was inspired by Lee Frost's wide angle photography and I wanted to experiment with different equipment to produce my photos of the sky.

I like this photo because he has split this photo into three thirds and the landscape taking up two of them. Also, I like how the photo is able to capture a lot more in and hold a lot more texture and tone from the clouds and sky. This is something I could aim for when using my wide angle lens and thing about how I set up the frame and position things in it.

Best Images

I like this photo because the wood around the edge helps fill in the frame a bit more and creates the illusion that you are looking through the photo. Also, I like how I've equally balanced the landscape with the sky to make the photo more visually pleasing.

I like this photo because I have never taken anything like this before and it shows how I'm experimenting with different techniques on how to take pictures of the sky and developing my work even further. Additionally, I like how the sunglasses lens is centred in the middle because you are still able to see the natural colour around the edge.

I like this photo because it creates a curved line into the frame and adds more texture to help build the image more. Also, due to the lack of texture from the sky, this creates a strong contrast and makes the photo seem more intriguing.

I like this photo because my sunglasses lens fills up most of the frame apart from a small section creating an intriguing affect. This helps my work stand out more because I have experimented on different ways on where I should position my sunglasses over the lens to create different affects and develop my photos further.

I like this photo because I used a wide angle lens and got to a high advantage point and took a photo of the scenery. This allowed me to experiment with different equipment and achieve a different outcomes compared to what I have gotten before. Also, I like how the heavy detail from the buildings is balanced out by the plain and calm sky.
Worst Images

I don't like this photo because it is slightly over exposed and you loose the detail from the sky and the scenery around because it is all slightly whitewashed. This is due to have my aperture in a too high of a setting, therefore, I've allowed too much light into the lens.

I don't like this photo because it looks very boring from the lack of detail and texture. Also, the tree does not hold a lot of texture or detail therefore not creating a strong contrast or a balance from the plain sky.
AO3
For this shoot, I drove up to Stansted Mountfichet and took pictures of the sky surrounding the castle and landscape. For this shoot, I was inspired by Stephen Shore's filtered photos and I wanted to incorporate something similar in my work. By doing this, it would allow me to experiment with different techniques and methods on how to take photos and make them look interesting. Additionally, this would make my photos look more interesting and stand out more.
AO2
For this shoot, I used my Canon 600D camera with a EPS 18-55 Canon lens and my Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD lens. I set my shutter speed to 1/125 and my ISO to 200 and later on in the day 400 because it started to get cloudy. I had my aperture mainly at 8.0 but for different photos I changed my settings accordingly depending on what my exposure dial suggested so I had the correctly exposed photos.
Manipulating my Images

AO1
I decided to research Stephen Shore and he helped me to produce photos with filters over them. This helps make his photos stand out because the filters create strong bold colours. I wanted to create the same affect so my photos would stand out and look different compared to my other shoots so I would have a large variety of photos. However, Shore uses professional filters to help him produce this and I do not have access to that and I had to develop my thinking on this idea and use what I had around me, therefore, I used my sunglasses to help achieve this. I like the affect this has given some of my photos because not everything in the frame has the filter over it.
AO4
My intentions for my photos was to create interesting images using filters like Stephen Shore does and due to the lack of equipment I had to use my sunglasses. This makes these photos more personal to me because most photographers do not use their sunglasses to help them create a filter, making my photos seem more quirky and unique and representing my personality through the image more.

I like how these photos turned out because they all hold strong bold colours which helps them stand out in their own way. Also, my photos with the sunglasses lens, I like how I kept everything inside the lens in colour and everything outside in black and white. This helped me experiment with different techniques to help achieve this and develop me photos further. Also, they stand out a lot more because I have never taken photos like this before.

For this shoot, I took pictures of the sky on the golf course I play on.
Research Artist
I was influenced by Simon Roberts because he uses different angles to create his photos

I like this photo because he has equally distributed the sky and the landscape to make the photo seem more balanced. Also, he has taken this photo from a high up angle to create the affect that we are looking down and across the field towards the sky. This is something I cloud aim for when I am thinking about what angle to take my photos because I could take them from high up angles and also a lot lower angles and make the viewer seem that they are looking up towards the sky.

Best Images

I like this photo because it is a lot different to what I have taken pictures of before, and shows how I have been experimenting with different ways of taking pictures of the sky. Also, I like how the trees add texture and create a curved line towards the ball allowing the viewer to travel along the leading line and through the picture.

I like how the two trees help fill up the frame slight and add more texture in the image, this helps make the photo seem more interesting and less plain. I like how the sky has not clouds and texture when the trees do creating a strong contrast.

I like how I have split the frame equally to help it look more balanced. Also, I like the strong contrast this photo gives from the high detail from the trees and the planish sky, this gives an overall calming and peaceful affect because everything is balanced with each other.

I like how the trees cut off part of the sky from the frame to add extra detail because there is no clouds in the sky to help add extra. Also, I like how the trees almost create a leading line around the edge of the frame to help carry the viewers eye through the photo.
Worst Images

I don't like this photo because it is too overly exposed because I have set my aperture too high and allowed too much light into the lens. Therefore, this hides the details from the photo because the extra light has made the photo slightly more whited out.

I don't like this photo because the sun is not defined nicely therefore creating some parts of the photo slightly whitewashed and makes the photo look less appealing. To improve this photo I would make sure to keep an eye on my exposure dial and make sure my aperture is set correctly.

I do not like this photo because I tried to capture the reflection of the sky in the water, however, to make this photo seem more interesting I could of taken an image like this when it was slightly more cloudy so more detail would of been reflected on the water.
AO3
For this shoot, I went around the golf course that I play and took pictures of the sky through the trees and looking over the golf course. Simon Roberts influenced me on this photo by thinking about which angles I could use when i'm taking photos because he normally takes photos from a high advantage point by standing on top of a van. While looking through his work, it made me think of the different angles I could use when I'm trying to take photos of the sky.
My second best image helps portray this because I got onto the ground and took pictures of the sky through a golf ball. This helped me frame the photo in an interesting way and allowed me to experiment with different elements to make my photos seem more interesting.
AO2
I used my Canon 600D camera with a EPS 18-55 Canon lens for this shoot. I had my shutter speed set to 1/125 and my ISO set to 200 because it was a sunny day. I had my aperture set to 8.0 because I didn't want too much light to be let into lens otherwise I would of had an overly exposed photo. However, depending on where I was and what angle I was shooting at I would of had to change my aperture accordingly.
Manipulating my Images

AO1
I decided to research Simon Roberts because he influenced me on to think about what angle I take my photos from, and giving me multiple ideas. I wanted my work to stand out, therefore, I took them from unusual angles, this allowed me to experiment with different methods on how to take photos and make them seem more interesting. However, Simon Roberts was able to stand on top of a van and take pictures from very high up to get a different advantage points, I was not able to access a similar thing due to health and safety.
AO4
To makes these more personal to me, I decided to take photos on a golf course that I love to play on. My intentions for this shoot was to experiment with different angles like Simon Roberts and develop my knowledge of taking photos with the sky. Also, by doing this, it will allow me to experiment with different techniques in photoshop and develop them further.

I like how these photos came out because I was able to experiment with different settings to create a more strong and cold coloured sky which stands out more compared the to scenery. Also, I like how I have experimented with the gradient tool to create an interesting photo where it smoothly transitions to a coloured photo to a black and white photo.

Work Record Four
For this shoot I decided to go into the local garden near me and take photos of the sky through the trees and the by the church. I took this shoot later on in the day so I could get a darker photos so it was slightly different compared to the other shoots I have done in the past where I have taken the roughly around midday.
Research Artist
Inspired by Stephen Shore, he made me realise that I could use different times of the day to produce intriguing sky photos and develop my final images even more.

This photo inspired me because I liked the different colours the sky has at dusk and the subtle texture from the clouds. Also, I like how the photo has a overall darker tone but the sky provides a slight contrast by having highlight going through the cloud from where the sun has hit it. This is something I could aim for when I do a shoot around dusk time and get a slightly darker shoot but still have a contrast from the sky to help it stand out further.

Best Images

I like this photo because it is only of the sky demonstrating a clear aim and has not other elements in the picture to distract from the sky. Additionally, I like how the clouds show a lot of texture making the photo seem more interesting, because of the texture it has created tone in the cloud causing a foreboding effect. This draws the eye in more and focus more on the darker areas of the cloud because the tone makes it more interesting.

I like this photo because the church and trees at the bottom of the image makes it look more interesting by filling up the frame slightly. Additionally, I like how the clouds go from a light orangey/ peachy colour to a darkish blue, the colour adds an extra element and helps the eye travel up the photo.

I like how the clouds in this photo have a lot of texture and go from a very light shade of peach/ orange to a dark shade of blue. These formal elements help add interesting factors and detail to my photo. Also, I like how there are no other clouds in the background which could of made the photo seem more busy a crowded.

I like how the sky is plain because it helps more of the focus to be on the moon and lamp. Due to the lamp being a strong, bold colour it helps create a strong contrast. Also, the top of the lamp almost looks like an arrow which is pointing towards the moon and making the viewer's eye to be dragged through the whole image.

I like how the trees add an extra element of texture and fill up the empty space to make the photo seem more intriguing. Also, I like how the trees look like an arrow pointing up towards the moon and allowing the viewer to travel through the photo. I like how the top half of the photo is plain and has no clouds so the main focus is on the moon, and nothing else is distracting.

I like how the tree in the centre of the frame adds texture which mimics the cloud and has no leaves so you can still see the colour and detail of the cloud behind it. Also, I like how the bottom half of the photo is blacked out so it creates a strong contrast to the sky above.
Images that require improvement

I don't like this photo because the branches make it seem too busy and the moon is partly cut out by one of them. Also, different trees are in this picture, therefore, it creates an overcrowding affect because not all of the branches follow the same patter.

I don't like this photo because there isn't a lot of detail, pattern or colour in the sky. Also, because the buildings are darker it creates an overall gloomy affect because the clouds are also very dark.

I don't like this photo because there is not contrast due to there being a lack of colour and texture from the cloud and sky. Therefore, this makes my photo seem a lot more boring and plain, and creating a dark, gloomy affect because there is only grey in the image.
AO3
For this shoot, I went around the local church garden in my town and waited till dusk to take them. I was inspired my Stephen Shore because he has taken a few photos around dusk which inspired me to do the same. His photos have a tiny bit of colour in them which is smoothly blended in with the dark blue from the clouds.
My third best image demonstrates how I have achieved this because there is a small amount of colour near the church but eventually blends in with the darker blue sky/ clouds which Stephen Shore's photos did. This photo helps demonstrate that I understand how Shore's technique works and I have developed my idea of sky further by taking photos at dusk instead of during the day, giving a variety of photos which I can later develop in photoshop.
AO2
I had my ISO set to 800 and towards the end of the shoot 1600 because it was late in the day and it was getting darker, therefore, i needed more light to get into the camera to get the correct exposed image, and set my shutter speed to 1/125 for most of the shoot. I had my aperture set to 11.0 and towards the end of the shoot 16.0 so I could allow more light into the camera so I did not end up with an under or over exposed image. Once again, I used my Canon 600D and my EPS 18-55 lens.

The artist I decided to research was Stephen Shore and he helped me come up with more ideas on what I could do to take pictures of the sky, for example, going to take pictures later on in the day. The colour was minimal in the photo but was still visible due to them being vibrant. I wanted to create a similar affect in my photos because it would make my photos look mysterious and intriguing by the colour not being too over powering.
AO4
To make these more personal to me, for one of my images I converted part of the photo into black and white to help the light and moon standout even more. Also, this allows me to experiment with different techniques in photoshop and develop my ideas even further. Also, I corrected some of the colours in the photos to help emphasise them and make the photo seem more intriguing to the viewer. This links to Stephen Shore because in a lot of his photos the vibrancy is high making his photos standout a lot more because he has also taken pictures of objects with strong, bold colours which he has later emphasised.

I like how these photos have ended up because the vibrancy in the colour is very dominant and takes a strong place in the photo. Also, due to the colour being strong, it has created a lot of texture in the clouds because the tones help emphasise the shadowy areas. The colours in the photo help create a strong contrast between the darker and lighter areas making the photos look overall more intriguing. Also, I like how I converted one of my photos into black and white but kept the lamppost and moon in colour to help make them stand out.
