Work Record 3

Work Record 3

For this shoot, I went to the forest which was near me and took pictures of the sky on higher up ground and through trees.

Research Artist

Lee Frost inspired me for this shoot because I like the way he uses the sun hidden behind the cloud to create a cool affect of the light illuminating the clouds around him.

I like this photo because the sun illuminates the cloud in front of it creating extra tone because the further away you go from the sun the darker of shade the clouds become. Also, I like how he has positioned the landscape three quarters the way up the frame to make the photo seem more equally distributed. This is something I could aim for when I am taking photos a cloudy day by taking more pictures of the sun behind the cloud and attempt to capture the same affect.

I like how the trees fill the side of the frame, almost as if it was going to circle around the moos; I like this affect because it draws more attention towards the moon. In my opinion, this photos creates an eerie and foreboding sensation by the tree having no leaves on it and the moon being the the middle of the circle.

I like how I have captured the sun behind the clouds but it still able to shine through a lot creating an interesting affect. Also, I like how the trees at the bottom of the frame helps fill the photo a bit more to add extra texture and detail to the photo.

I like how you travel towards to the top right corner from the bottom left it has less detail, this helps make the photo seem more balanced and helps the viewers eye travel from one side to the other - this helps add more emphasise to the bottom of the frame where most of the detail is. Also, due to the photo not being overly busy, it makes the photo seem more alluring.

I like how the trees create a curved line into the frame and towards to sun, almost making the eye travel along the line to the sun. This creates a calming affect and makes the overall photo seem more peaceful. Also, I like how the sun, once again, is behind the cloud which illuminates the other clouds around creating an interesting affect because the further away you travel from the sun the darker the clouds get.

Images that require improvement

I don't like this photo because I ended up getting solar glare and the photo is slightly over exposed. Due to this, you are not able to see any detail from the sky or clouds behind.

I don't like this photo because it is slightly over exposed making the sky seem very white, therefore, this makes the photo less interesting because there is no detail or texture from the clouds or sky.

I don't like this photo because you can not see the sky through the thick amount of branches. This makes the photo seem over crowded and busy and thus not interesting. If I wanted to take a picture like this I would of found a gap in the trees somewhere where it is slightly more spars and can get more of the sky into the frame.

AO3
The artist the influenced me in for this shoot was Lee Frost, because he takes many pictures of clouds stretching across the whole frame with the sun shining through behind it. I liked this affect because it created a nice peaceful affect because the detail in the cloud made a calming mood. I wanted to create a similar affect with my photos because it would have a different mood/ affect compared to my other photos.

My second best image had this similar affect and I was able to capture the sun shining through the cloud. When taking photos for this shoot, I made sure that I could capture and image similar to Lee Frost because I wanted to demonstrate that I understood his technique and I could incorporate it into my own.

AO2
For this shoot, I used my Canon 600D camera with a EPS 18-55 Canon lens. I set my ISO to 200 because I was taking a lot of photos towards the sun and when I was taking photos away from the sun and through the trees I had my ISO set to 400, and my shutter speed was set to 1/125 throughout most of the shoot. When taking pictures including the sun, I set my aperture to 5.6 so I could get detail from the sky without an overly exposed photo. When I was taking photos through the trees, I set my aperture to 8.0 because the trees would block a lot of light, therefore I needed to let in more light so I could get the correct exposed photo.

Manipulating my Images

AO1
The artist I looked at for this shoot was Lee Frost and some of his photos of long stretches of clouds going across and filling up the whole frame. I wanted to create a similar affect, therefore, I waited for a partly cloudy day but you were still able to see a lot of the blue sky. Also, Lee Frost sets his camera setting so he is able to get heavy detail in the clouds and sky and I attempted to get the same affect by changing my settings in my camera for the same photo so I can look at the later and see which one I got the affect with.

AO4
To make this shoot more personal to me, I took these photos in the forest I used to play in as a child, therefore, when I was taking these photos a lot of memories came back and allowing me to take photos with more passion. Also, Lee Frost converts most of his images into black and white and I decided to keep them in colour and show the vibrance of the colours, almost representing the vibrancy of my childhood there.

I like how these edits came out because I was able to help emphasise the sun behind the cloud and create more tone which caused a stronger contrast between the light and darker areas. Also, I like how I have edited the colour in the sky to come out more to make my photo seem more intriguing because there is another formal element to help build it up. By doing this, it has allowed me to experiment which techniques work best when I want to create a more vibrant photo with more tone without the photo becoming too gritty.
